7 ways to celebrate St Patrick's Day in Auckland

With the official celebrations taking place on Saturday, March 17, here’s how to make the most out of the St Patrick’s Festival in the run-up to the big day in Auckland.

Older Than Ireland Film screening

Saturday, March 10. 6pm at Academy Cinemas, Lorne St, Auckland. $15.

Don’t miss the final screening of this hilarious and at times heart-breaking documentary in which 30 Irish centenarians chat about their long lives and the history they’ve witnessed. Bring your tissues!

Irish Fair Day

Sunday, March 11.  Auckland Irish Society, Rocky Nook Ave, Fowlds Park, Morningside. 11am-5pm. Free entry.

Take the whole family along to Auckland Irish Society’s Irish Fair Day.  Enjoy Irish music and dancing and traditional Irish games. There is plenty of entertainment for the kids including face painting, vertical bungy and the wee Irish cottage on the playground. 

Irish Whiskey Tasting

Wednesday, March 14. The Jefferson, Fort Lane, Auckland. 7pm-9pm. $40 

The word whiskey comes from the Gaelic ‘uisce beatha’ which literally means ‘water of life’. Whiskey connoisseur Nigel Kelly is hosting a special evening of Irish whiskey tasting to learn more about Ireland’s finest spirit. Jameson, Teeling, RedBreast, Millers, Bushmills and Connemara whiskeys will be available to try.

Hugh Green Group St Patrick's Day Parade

Saturday, March 17. Ponsonby Rd, Auckland. 12pm-1pm. Free

It's the biggest St Patrick's Day parade in the Southern Hemisphere. See a huge variety of Irish costumes, floats, bands, faerie folk, and even St Patrick himself.

Hugh Green Group Irish Music and Dance Festival

Saturday, March 17. Western Park, Ponsonby, Auckland. 11am-6pm. Free entry

Following the parade, head down to Western Park to immerse yourself in Irish music and dance. There's also a licensed bar, food stalls and children’s activities. 

The Global Greening

Various. March 16 &17

Every year more than 300 iconic world buildings go green for St Patrick’s Day.  The ‘Global Greening’ has seen everything from the Eiffel Tower and Sydney Opera House to the pyramids in Egypt lit up green on March 17. This year Auckland has four landmarks taking part in the Greening - the Sky Tower, Eden Park, Auckland Museum and – for the first time ever – Auckland Harbour Bridge.
