NZ Listener and North & South win at NZ's top media awards

Michelle Langstone's essay In a Scorched Room won a Voyager award.

New Zealand's leading current affairs magazines pick up Voyager Media Awards.

NZ Listener and North & South magazines have been recognised for excellence in journalism and design at the Voyager Media Awards 2019.

North & South contributing writer Michelle Langstone won the Best first-person essay award for her piece, In a Scorched Room.

The judges said: "This was a very tough category with excellent writers addressing a wide range of topics. However, Michelle Langstone had the edge with a moving and beautifully written account of how working at a bird sanctuary helped her deal with severe anxiety."

NZ Listener's Diana Wichtel and Charlotte Grimshaw jointly won Reviewer of the Year for their work. Wichtel's winning portfolio included: Louis Theroux grapples with his own failure in new Jimmy Savile doco and Jacinda Ardern had a baby – and Mike Hosking had kittens. Grimshaw's portfolio included Why Buddhism is true, a secularist's perspective.

The judges said: "While New Zealand journalism has no shortage of reviewers, it has a dearth of intelligent, thoughtful and witty critics who write with the sort of style, depth of knowledge and lack of self-important bluster that co-winners Charlotte Grimshaw and Diana Wichtel demonstrate in their highly readable, entertaining — and ultimately inseparable — portfolios. They are class acts. Co-winners Charlotte Grimshaw and Diana Wichtel are easily the country’s best and most readable critics, writing with intelligence, humour and style.’

North & South's art director Jenny Nicholls picked up Best magazine cover at the awards.

The judges said: "North & South consistently goes to the depth of storytelling with simple, yet strong cover design. Keeping her audience in mind, Art Director Jenny Nicholls doesn’t rely on templates or cliché photographic choices instead creating an intriguing mood with bold use of colour, striking typefaces, and innovative approaches to illustrations and image cropping. Jenny shows a strong resolve for the treatment of coverlines and by embracing the entire cover canvas. By taking a fresh approach to sensitive or complex topics, North & South gives readers a sense of discovery."

Another Bauer Media title, HOME New Zealand, won Best magazine design.

Twenty-four finalists were selected from the Bauer Media portfolio across 16 award categories.

More than 600 guests gathered at Cordis, Auckland on Friday 17 May for the awards dinner to celebrate the work of print and broadcast journalists, photographers, videographers, opinion and feature writers, reviewers, artists and cartoonists.
